Over 300 children who died in the Gambia, Indonesia, and Uzbekistan last year as a result of contaminated cough treatments, prompting the World Health Organization to call for “an emergency and comprehensive action.”
According to a statement on Monday, the WHO also cautioned that children in the Philippines, Timor Leste, Senegal, and Cambodia may be affected because the medications may have been sold there as well.
The concerned parties are urging the Indian manufacturers Maiden Pharmaceuticals and Marion Biotech as well as four Indonesian companies – who have denied the toxic chemicals were in their products to take the aforementioned medications off the market and only use certified suppliers for their ingredients.
