Caricom Backs Guyana in Border Dispute with Venezuela: A Stand for Peace and Sovereignty

The Caribbean Community (Caricom) displays unwavering support for Guyana amidst their ongoing territorial dispute with Venezuela over the resource-rich Essequibo region. The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, along with the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, have publicly reinforced their countries' individual backing for Guyana in this border conflict.

Caricom's Stance

During a press conference held in Guyana, Mottley asserted that Caricom fully supports Guyana's steadfast position and the decision to bring the dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Going a step further, Mottley pledged an overwhelming 150 percent support for Guyana, reflecting the depth of solidarity within the Caribbean community.

In addition to this, Gonsalves stressed the importance of fostering tranquility in the region and firmly rejected any use or threat of force in the dispute. He also made it clear that while Caricom stands by Guyana's territorial sovereignty, Venezuela is still considered a friend. He expressed a hopeful vision for the Caribbean to continue being a peaceful zone, devoid of territorial conflicts.

Global Reactions

Meanwhile, the global community has also shown an active interest in this border dispute. The Commonwealth Secretariat and the Organization of American States have joined Caricom in rejecting Venezuela's proposed referendum scheduled for December 3rd. The International Court of Justice has reserved its judgement on Guyana’s claim, emphasizing the violation of international law by Venezuela's unilateral actions. The court is expected to deliver its ruling soon, marking an anticipated climax in this territorial controversy.
