On Friday, Wyoming’s Governor Mark Gordon signed a bill that had been approved by state legislators earlier this month, which outlaws the use of abortion pills in the state.
Governor Gordon, who is a member of the Republican party, signed the bill into law while a federal judge in Texas is deliberating on a case brought by anti-abortion groups seeking a nationwide ban on the medication abortion pill, mifepristone.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, legal battles over abortion rights have intensified in the United States.
Some abortion providers have stated that if mifepristone is banned, they would use a regimen that involves only misoprostol for medication abortion.
However, this regimen is considered less effective than using mifepristone and misoprostol together, and it is unclear how widely available it would be.
