Over the years, scientists have discovered more than 4,000 exoplanets, planets outside our solar system, in our galaxy alone. The Kepler Space Telescope, launched by NASA, has played a pivotal role in these discoveries. The Kepler mission has greatly expanded our understanding of the universe by identifying a large number of these exoplanets. It does so by detecting the slight dimming of stars as planets pass in front of them, an occurrence known as a transit.
The Milky Way: A Treasure Trove of Planets
The number of planets in our galaxy, the Milky Way, is estimated to be in the billions. Scientists make this estimation based on the number of stars in the galaxy and the assumption that most of these stars have at least one planet orbiting them. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that our own solar system alone houses eight known planets.
A Universe Teeming with Planets
It is estimated that there are approximately two trillion galaxies in the universe. If each of these galaxies potentially contains billions of planets, akin to our Milky Way, the total number of planets in the universe could be an almost inconceivable figure. Some estimates suggest the number could be in the order of sextillions, a number followed by 21 zeros.
The Future of Exoplanet Discovery
While the exact number of planets in the universe cannot be definitively known due to its vastness and our current technological limitations, estimates suggest an astronomical number of planets. The development of technology, such as the Kepler Space Telescope, has significantly aided in the discovery of exoplanets, further expanding our knowledge of the cosmos. As our technology continues to advance, we can expect the number of known planets to increase, further pushing the boundaries of our understanding of the universe.
