In a statement, UNHCR said, “The UN and its partners are urging the international community to not forget or neglect the people of Afghanistan.

Despite the challenges, humanitarian partners remain on the ground and are delivering assistance and protection inside Afghanistan and in the region.”

Millions of Afghans are seeking support from the international community and their country's interim leaders for peace, security, and opportunities.

Financial aid is critical to preventing widespread hunger, disease, malnutrition, and ultimately, death.

The Regional Refugee Response Plan for the Afghanistan Situation 2023 is asking for US$613 million to support Afghans in five neighboring countries: Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Approximately 8.2 million Afghans, including over 2 million registered refugees, are residing in these countries.

The majority have been in the region for decades, mostly in Iran and Pakistan, where they have been offered access to public services at great cost.

Approximately 1.6 million people have arrived in the region since 2021. More than 70% of those in need of support are women and children.

Moreover, a separate UN-wide plan has been launched to address the humanitarian needs within Afghanistan. The plan is seeking $4.62 billion to aid 23.7 million Afghans in 2023.

Afghanistan is currently undergoing one of the world's most significant and critical humanitarian crises.

Around 28.3 million individuals, two-thirds of the population (including women and girls), require humanitarian and protection assistance.

The statement further adds, "Needs have been further exacerbated by recent restrictions on women, including the ban on female Afghan NGO staff."
