Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv mayor punches back at Ukraine president’s criticism

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv and former professional boxer, on Sunday hit back at criticism by Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, over the measures to help residents withstand power cuts. He termed these disputes as “senseless” in the midst of Russia’s military campaign.

Klitschko explained that already 430 “warming centres” are helping the public to cope with the effects of Russian attacks on power stations. Over 100 more are planned in case of extreme conditions. Zelensky expressed last week that, there are complaints about measures adopted in the capital.

Klitschko conveyed in a video message, “I do not want to become involved in political battles, particularly in the current situation. That is senseless. I have things to do in the city”.

Klitschko engaged in many disputes with Zelenskiy before the conflict. He said, the president’s allies engaged in “manipulation” about the city’s efforts, including “incomprehensible photos”, which were posted online.

Klitschko said, “To put it mildly, this is not nice. Not for Ukrainians or for our foreign partners. Today, like never before, everyone must unite and work together. And here we have some sort of political games”.
Last week, Zelenskiy promoted the efforts of thousands of “invincibility centres” set up throughout Ukraine, which provide heat, water, internet, and mobile phone links.

Five years after Klitschko first took office, Zelenskiy got elected as President in 2019. Prior to the war, the two leaders, Klitschko and Zelenskiy, clashed over the way the capital and its services were being run.
