Unrest in Uganda: Green Valley High School Student Strike Prompts Police Intervention

The Spark of Unrest
Green Valley High School, located in Kayunga, Uganda, became the centre of a notable incident when a student strike compelled local law enforcement into action. The students, fuelled by frustration and desperation, claimed that they had not received any lessons from their teachers since the middle of the previous academic term, despite paying their school fees.
The Underlying Issue
The school, home to roughly 300 students, was reportedly dealing with financial difficulties stemming from a bank loan. Such circumstances led the proprietor, Mr Walulya, to seek a business partner for assistance. However, the students’ discontent escalated to the point where they detained one of the school directors, Abdul, on the school premises and made attempts to pelt him with stones.
Ensuring Safety and Order
The anti-riot police from Kayunga Central Police Station swiftly stepped in, managing to defuse the situation before it could escalate to physical damage to school property or individuals. Kayunga District Police Commander, Ms Rosette Sikahwa, reported that the police were able to contain the situation without resorting to arrests.
Investigations Underway
Ms Sikahwa further stated that investigations into the students’ allegations were ongoing. The school authorities and a group of teachers present during the incident held a meeting with the security personnel to discuss the situation further. The authorities remain committed to resolving the issue and ensuring a harmonious academic environment.
School Directors Vs Teachers: A Clash of Perspectives
One of the school directors accused the teachers of instigating the students to strike. The director denied the students’ allegations about not receiving lessons for a prolonged period, and suggested that some teachers had a hand in the strike. He criticised the students for staging a strike rather than appreciating the low-cost, quality education provided by the school.
Meeting with the Students
After the meeting with the staff, the security personnel and school management addressed the students. The incident primarily highlights the students’ dissatisfaction with the lack of academic instruction, leading to the strike, police intervention, and the ongoing investigation. It underscores the importance of transparency and communication between school authorities, teachers, and students for smooth operation of educational institutions.
