The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) released its first forecast for crop production in 2023, revealing positive growth expectations in various agricultural sectors. According to the estimations, cereals, and other herbal products are projected to increase by 4.8 percent, vegetables by 1.9 percent, and fruits, beverages, and spice plants by 0.3 percent compared to the previous year. These estimations indicate a promising outlook for Turkey's agricultural sector in the coming year.

Promising Growth in Cereal and Plant Products

The TUIK's forecast predicts a significant increase in the production of cereals and other plant products in 2023. The estimations suggest a growth rate of 4.8 percent, resulting in a projected total output of 73.6 million tons. Specifically, the production of cereal products is expected to increase by 2.1 percent, reaching approximately 39.5 million tons.

Wheat, Barley, and Other Cereal Production

Among the cereals, wheat production is expected to increase by 3.8 percent, reaching 20.5 million tons. Barley production is estimated to grow by 1.2 percent, reaching 8.6 million tons. Rye production is projected to increase by 4.4 percent, totaling 285 thousand tons, while oat production is expected to rise by 2 percent, reaching 375 thousand tons.

Legumes and Tuber Plants

In the legumes category, the forecast predicts the production of 580 thousand tons of chickpeas, 270 thousand tons of dry beans, and 400 thousand tons of red lentils. Potato production, a significant tuber plant, is estimated to increase by 5.8 percent compared to the previous year, with a total projected output of 5.5 million tons.

Oil Seeds and Vegetable Production

The estimations suggest a decrease of 3.2 percent in soybean production, with a projected output of 150 thousand tons. On the other hand, sunflower production is expected to reach approximately 2.6 million tons. In the vegetable category, overall production is anticipated to increase by 1.9 percent in 2023, totaling around 32.2 million tons.

Variations in Vegetable Production

The forecast highlights several variations in vegetable production. Notably, cucumber production is expected to increase by 13.8 percent, tomatoes by 3.8 percent, and dry onions by 1.1 percent. However, a decrease of 7.3 percent is predicted for watermelon, 9.3 percent for melons, and 2.6 percent for gum zucchini.

Positive Outlook for Fruit Production

The estimations for fruit production in 2023 show overall growth compared to the previous year. The forecast predicts a 0.3 percent increase in production, reaching approximately 26.9 million tons.

Among the different fruit categories, the forecast anticipates a 1.3 percent decrease in apple production and a significant decrease of 25 percent in olive production compared to the previous year. However, there are positive expectations for peach and nectarine show, which are projected to increase by 7.8 percent. Additionally, cherry production is expected to rise by 18.6 percent, and strawberry production by 1.6 percent. Citrus fruits, such as tangerines, oranges, and lemons, are also likely to see growth, with estimations of 12.6 percent.
