Tragic Bus Accidents Unfold in Peru and Obzovica

Recent reports have shed light on two tragic bus accidents that occurred in Peru and Obzovica, shedding light on the urgent need for improved road safety measures worldwide. In Peru, a passenger bus accident led to the death of at least 24 people, according to a representative of the operating company, Molina Union. In Obzovica, a bus accident on the Cetinje – Budva road resulted in at least two fatalities, with several others injured.

Peru’s Road Tragedy

The bus was traveling from Ayacucho to the city of Huancayo, Peru’s transportation supervisory agency (SUTRAN) confirmed. The accident reportedly occurred early Monday morning. However, neither the police nor the bus company has confirmed the exact time of the accident. Local media outlets reported that the accident happened at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Manuel Zevallos, the mayor of the Anco district where the accident took place, stated earlier on Monday that at least 20 people had died and 20 were injured. SUTRAN indicated that initial investigations showed that the bus had an up-to-date safety inspection and accident insurance. However, accidents are relatively common along Peru’s precarious roads, with at least 24 people dying in a similar accident in January when a bus plunged off a cliff in the country’s north.

Obzovica’s Deadly Incident

In Obzovica, between 30 and 35 passengers were on the bus when the accident occurred, and there were no children among them. The bus landed on the route between Obzovica and Brajić, and two passengers were confirmed dead. The identity of one of the deceased, a woman, has not yet been established; the other deceased passenger was a British man.

The bus driver, a 36-year-old man, was detained and taken to the police station. The driver reported a severe pain in the back of his head before the bus hit the embankment on a right-hand curve, broke it, and landed the vehicle in a ravine. Seventeen people with minor injuries were transferred to the hospital in Cetinje, while one seriously injured person was transported to the Clinical Center in Podgorica.

Investigations and Rescue Operations

Following the accidents, extensive investigations and rescue operations were launched. In Obzovica, an elevator crane and a tow truck were used to pull the bus out of the abyss. The police allowed traffic in one lane towards Budva later in the day. The area was thoroughly searched to ensure that no injured or deceased individuals were left unattended.

At the accident scene, rescue teams used a cable from a fire service car to secure the bus in the ravine, preventing it from falling further into the abyss. Funeral service workers and rescue teams began transferring the bodies of the victims later in the day. Further investigations into these accidents are ongoing.
