President Mwinyi Urges Innovation to Boost Domestic Tourism and Economic Growth

Unguja, President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has rallied authorities, investors, and business community members to devise practical strategies and innovative solutions to stimulate domestic tourism and attract a higher number of tourists. Highlighting untapped potential within the country, President Mwinyi praised the ‘Kizimkazi-Samia Festival’ as a noteworthy initiative that can invigorate tourism in Zanzibar.
President Mwinyi underscored that numerous dormant opportunities exist within the country that, if harnessed effectively, could propel the tourism sector forward. Acknowledging the ‘Kizimkazi-Samia Festival’ as a prime example, he applauded President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her visionary approach. The festival, held at the Kashangae grounds in Paje coastal village, Unguja South Region, serves as a magnet for both visitors and businesses, particularly small traders.
In his address during the inauguration of the week-long 2023 Kizimkazi-Samia Festival, President Mwinyi celebrated the festival’s role in generating employment within the tourism sector. He encouraged the youth to seize these opportunities, which extend to the Blue Economy sector involving fishing and seaweed farming. President Mwinyi highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting these initiatives to enhance production and meet growing market demands.
Cultural Events as Tourist Magnets
Drawing parallels with the ‘Mwaka-Kongwa’ cultural event in Makunduchi, President Mwinyi emphasized the significance of attracting visitors, including tourists, through culturally enriching events. He stressed the importance of sustaining such attractions, as they not only bolster tourism but also strengthen unity and camaraderie among diverse communities.
President Mwinyi lauded the Kizimkazi Festival’s role in fostering unity and collaboration between the people of Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. The event’s appeal transcends regional boundaries, as individuals from the mainland eagerly journey to participate in the festivities.
The Kizimkazi-Samia Festival offers a diverse array of activities that captivate attendees. From observing wildlife in enclosures to savoring traditional cuisine, engaging in sports, and reveling in entertainment, the festival is a vibrant collage of experiences. Notably, the festival also includes ceremonial events such as the inauguration of development projects or the laying of foundation stones.
Prior to the festival inauguration at Paje, President Mwinyi took a significant step toward improved healthcare by laying the foundation stone for a modern health center in Kizimkazi. The President extended gratitude to the private sector and development partners, with special mention to the People’s Bank of Zanzibar (PBZ) and NBC Bank, for their contributions to advancing the development of Kizimkazi and Unguja South Region.
Regional Growth and Collaborative Leadership
Mr. Rashid Hadid Rashid, the Regional Commissioner for Unguja South, expressed admiration for both President Samia and President Mwinyi for their proactive efforts in fostering regional and national development. Mr. Rashid applauded their hands-on initiatives that have resulted in the enhancement of infrastructure including roads, health centers, schools, and water supply systems across the region.
He conveyed optimism for a future where the residents of South Unguja would witness and enjoy the tangible benefits of these progressive development projects. Mr. Rashid affirmed the region’s anticipation of forthcoming improvements that stand to elevate the quality of life and propel economic growth.
