Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, called for redoubled efforts from the international community to find a solution to the ongoing conflict in Syria, on the 12th anniversary of the Syrian civil war.
In a statement, he emphasized the EU’s support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Syrian state.
The Syrian people had protested against the Bashar Al-Assad regime during the Arab Spring in 2011, and the regime had responded in a manner that was deemed unacceptable by the UN and against human rights.
Borrell reiterated the EU’s stance that they would not normalize with the Syrian regime unless it meaningfully engaged in a political solution to the conflict, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
