ICRC Facilitates Reconnection for Sudanese Refugees in Chad

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in collaboration with the Chadian Red Cross, has achieved a significant breakthrough by reuniting 558 Sudanese refugees in Chad with their families. These refugees, who were cut off from news of their loved ones, have been able to reestablish contact through a concerted effort. The ICRC’s tireless work has facilitated more than 1,500 phone calls, a remarkable accomplishment with over a third of these calls yielding positive outcomes since the commencement of this initiative in early July.

Restoring Connections: A Lifeline for Refugees
Among the heartening outcomes of this effort, individuals with gunshot wounds from conflict were able to reach out to their families, providing much-needed reassurance in a challenging time. Additionally, patients receiving medical care in Chadian health facilities utilized this opportunity to make a total of 56 phone calls. The ICRC, in collaboration with the Red Cross teams, has also identified and registered more than twenty unaccompanied minors, a crucial step in aiding the search for their missing relatives.
Addressing Ongoing Challenges: A Multifaceted Endeavor
The ICRC’s statement acknowledged the persisting challenges posed by the ongoing violence in Darfur, which may lead to an increase in the number of missing persons in the coming weeks. The situation is compounded by the significant displacements occurring due to the conflict. While approximately 37% of the phone calls conducted thus far have yielded positive results, the ICRC emphasized that many families remain without any news regarding the fate of their missing relatives.

Communication remains a significant hurdle in the current Sudanese context, where the means of communication continue to be unstable, particularly in the Darfur region. The lack of financial resources among displaced families, coupled with the challenges brought about by floods during the rainy season, further limits the possibilities for conducting thorough searches.
Appeal for Support: Meeting Growing Humanitarian Needs
The ICRC has issued a call to action, urging donors to provide support to address the escalating humanitarian needs in both eastern Chad and Sudan. The limited resources available necessitate increased assistance to aid these vulnerable populations. As the challenges continue to mount, the ICRC’s efforts underscore the crucial role of collaboration and international support in reuniting families, offering solace, and providing a lifeline of communication amidst adversity.
