According to reports, the incident of Chinese flight happened on Thursday, just before the announcement of the Pentagon that, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin @SecDef will visit Seoul for talks with his South Korean counterpart, Lee Jong-sup during next week. This is seen as an occasion to highlight their commitment to cementing the bilateral alliance.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), “Chinese fighters entered the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) at 10:30 a.m. and 11:10 a.m., respectively, from an area southwest of Ieo Islet, a submerged rock south of the southern island of Jeju, and exited it at around noon. One of the fighters re-entered the KADIZ at 3 p.m. and left it about 30 minutes later. Both jets didn’t violate the South's air space”.

South Korean Air Force was ready to operate F-15K combat aircraft and other aircrafts as a tactical step against potential accidental situation, while the two Chinese aircrafts approached the KADIZ.

Basically, the air defense zone is not territorial airspace. But, it is delineated in order to call on foreign planes to identify themselves, in order to prevent accidental clashes.
