Ukraine Crisis: A Looming Shadow of a Global Conflict?

Unfolding Crisis in Ukraine
It has been 19 months since the initiation of the “special military operation” by Vladimir Putin’s troops. What began as a conflict in Eastern Ukraine, bordering Russia, has gradually encroached further inland. Despite attempts by nations like China to mitigate the situation through non-military solutions, the key stakeholders, Putin’s government, and Volodímir Zelenski’s administration, remain rigid on issues such as territorial control, rendering negotiations challenging.

Slow Progress in Reclaiming Occupied Areas
In June, Ukraine commenced a counteroffensive to reclaim occupied territories. However, progress has been sluggish and deemed a “failure” by its adversaries, including Putin. The Russian occupation has significantly extended beyond Moscow’s initial expectations.
Urgent Appeals for Western Support
Zelenski has continuously urged the West not only to continue its military assistance but also to expedite the process. He warns that each passing day could potentially advantage his adversary, whom he likened to the leader of Germany until 1945. Zelenski cautioned that a fall of Ukraine could see Putin’s troops reach Poland in a decade, escalating the situation towards a potential World War III.
According to Zelenski, Ukraine is bearing the brunt of the conflict with the highest casualties. While expressing gratitude for assistance from nations like the United States, he advocates for a more global intervention to avert a worldwide confrontation. He also underscored the forthcoming general elections in the United States and their possible effects on the continuation or cessation of assistance.

Russia Summons French Ambassador Over Alleged Discrimination
On Monday, Russia summoned the French ambassador in Moscow over an alleged discrimination incident during the G20 Summit. Reportedly, journalists were denied access to a press conference with President Emmanuel Macron. The French representative, Pierre Levy, was accused of “discriminatory and clearly Russophobic actions of the representatives of the French authorities against correspondents of RIA Novosti and the editor-in-chief of Russia News at the G20 summit in New Delhi,” as per a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Is the Crisis a Precursor to World War III?
As the Ukraine crisis continues to escalate, concerns are mounting over the possibility of a global war. With Putin’s offensive being the most significant conventional military invasion since World War II, fears are growing that it may be the precursor to another world war. Despite the fighting currently limited to Ukraine and not spilling over into nearby NATO member countries, experts warn that war is unpredictable and escalation can be inadvertent.
Putin’s Role in the Escalating Crisis
Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine has drawn international alarm, with some suggesting that his actions could be the biggest factor in a potential global crisis. Despite facing sanctions from Western leaders, Putin’s determination on Ukraine seems undeterred. His actions have been described as brazen, reckless, unpredictable, and self-harming, creating a serious concern for war.

Global Response to the Crisis
Several countries have publicly supported Ukraine. The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, and Germany have sent missiles, rocket launchers, or machine guns to aid Ukraine’s resistance. If the conflict escalates further, Western governments may be more inclined to respond directly. However, that seems to be a long way off, contingent on the indiscriminate violence and killing of more innocent people.
