China Encourages Economic Cooperation with Russia
Despite Western disapproval following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China is advocating for increased cross-border connectivity and mutual trade and investment cooperation with Russia. The Russian Minister of Economic Development and the Chinese Commerce Minister recently engaged in detailed discussions on economic collaboration. This discussion coincided with a visit by China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, to Moscow for strategic talks, culminating in the confirmation of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Beijing next month.

China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao stated that the economic and trade cooperation between the two nations has continued to strengthen under the strategic guidance of their leaders. As Russia faces Western sanctions due to the war in Ukraine, it has turned to China for economic support, meeting Chinese demand for oil, gas, and grain. In August, Chinese imports of Russian goods rose 3% from the previous year to $11.5 billion.
China Dismisses Western Criticism
China has rejected Western criticism of its growing partnership with Russia, insisting that its alliances do not violate international norms and that it has the right to collaborate with any country of its choosing. The Russian Far East, bordering China and North Korea, has gained new strategic significance as a zone of cross-border trade and commerce.

New Opportunity for Cross-border Trade
Recently, a transshipment oil complex was agreed to be built near a railway bridge linking Russia to China by Russia’s United Oil- and Gas-Chemical Co. and China’s Xuan Yuan Industrial Development. The Russian Far East, which catches about 70% of Russia’s seafood, also aims to increase its marine product exports to China. Chinese state media has indicated that there’s a growing necessity for China and Russia to increase their grain trading amid tight global supplies. The construction of a grain corridor linking Russia to China’s northeastern bread basket, Heilongjiang, will help enhance China’s food security.
China’s Strategic Gateway in the North
Earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed that Heilongjiang should become a pivotal gateway for China’s opening up in the north. He stated that the province should play an active role in safeguarding national defense, food, and energy security. This strategic move highlights the importance of Heilongjiang in China’s economic and security plans, emphasizing the province’s role in the cross-border trade and investment collaboration with Russia.

China’s growing economic partnership with Russia amid global tensions reveals its strategic approach to international relations. By strengthening its ties with Russia, China not only secures its economic interests but also fortifies its geopolitical position. Despite Western criticism, China continues to assert its sovereign right to form alliances and foster cooperation with any nation it chooses. As global dynamics continue to evolve, the strengthening Sino-Russian cooperation could reshape the global economic and political landscape significantly.
