Remembering Egil ‘Snapper’n’ Johansen: A Norwegian Football Legend

A Loss to the Football Community
Egil «Snapper’n» Johansen, a revered figure in the Norwegian football realm and a legend for Vålerenga, has recently passed away at the age of 61. The news was announced by Vålerenga on their social media platform, expressing profound condolences and extending their sympathy to Johansen’s family. The emotional message highlighted that Johansen will forever remain a cherished part of the club’s history.
Extraordinary Player and Individual
Remembered fondly by his former teammate Bengt Eriksen, Johansen is described as a kind, humorous, and generous individual who was an extraordinary football player. Eriksen expressed his sadness over the news and extended his thoughts towards Johansen’s children and nieces, emphasizing his qualities as a loving father, uncle, partner, and person.
Johansen’s Battle with ALS
Earlier in the year, Johansen had publicly shared his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive disease impacting the nervous system. Reflecting on the rapid progression of the disease, Eriksen noted that Johansen’s illness had not been diagnosed during his 60th birthday celebrations in April of the previous year.
Unforgettable Career
Johansen had a successful football career, playing for Norway in 12 international matches between 1984–1987, and club football for Bøler, Vålerenga, Beveren in Belgium, and Frigg. He was part of two of Vålerenga’s three series victories in the 1980s and also participated in one series bronze and two cup finals.
Tributes and Accolades
Vålerenga fans celebrated Johansen at Intility Arena on the 16th of May, known as the National Day of Football. He described the experience as overwhelmingly fantastic and an unforgettable experience. Eriksen describes Johansen as one of the best he has ever played with, known for his goal-scoring, dribbling, and understanding of the game. Another former teammate, Erik Foss, also praised Johansen, stating that he was among the best in Vålerenga and was always a crowd-pleasing player.
A Memento from Childhood
Johansen’s nickname, “Snapper’n”, is not related to football but comes from his childhood days playing ice hockey as a goalie. It is a testament to his versatile athleticism and passion for sports that transcended beyond the realm of football.
Final Thoughts
The loss of Egil ‘Snapper’n’ Johansen will be felt deeply within the football community, particularly in Norway and Vålerenga. His contributions to the game, both as a player and a person, will continue to inspire future generations. His life and career serve as a reminder of the spirit of sportsmanship, perseverance, and the human capacity to touch lives through the love of a game.
