Saudi Arabia Extends Vital Aid to Flood-Ravaged Areas in Pakistan

The King Salman HumanitarianAidand Relief Center (KSrelief) has distributed 1,367 shelter bags to 9,569 individuals from vulnerable families in flood-affected areas of Swat, Lower Chitral, and Dera Ismail Khan in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. This initiative, part of the third phase of a project to distribute shelter materials and winter bags in 2024, underscores Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to those in need worldwide.

Why this matters: The provision of aid to flood-affected areas in Pakistan highlights the importance of international cooperation in responding to natural disasters, and demonstrates the critical role that humanitarian organizations can play in supporting vulnerable communities. As climate-related disasters become increasingly frequent and severe, the need for effective humanitarian responses will only continue to grow.

The aid distribution is within the framework of the Kingdom's humanitarian and relief efforts provided through KSrelief to help those in need globally. In March, the center delivered 100 tons of dates to Pakistan as part of its comprehensive support. KSrelief also dispatched 873 tons of essential food supplies to Pakistan's southwestern port city of Gwadar on Sunday, intended to support the flood-affected population in Gwadar, Kharan, and Kech districts of Balochistan province.

The emergency relief convoy carried 9,000 food packages, each weighing 97kg, comprising food staples such as flour, cooking oil, sugar, split chickpeas, and dates, which would sustain families for a month. In addition to food assistance, KSrelief is providing 9,000 Shelter NFIs kits, offering essential relief items including shelters, solar panels, blankets, plastic mats, kitchen sets, water coolers, and antibacterial soap.

Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan, Nawaf Al-Maliki, highlighted the Kingdom's humanitarian endeavors, emphasizing the pivotal role played by KSrelief in extending aid worldwide. Brigadier Obaidullah Anwar, representing the Pakistani government, expressed deep appreciation for the generous gift, remarking on the significance of the gesture and the strong bond of brotherhood between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

The floods in Gwadar and surrounding areas began on February 26, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to travel to the city and announce compensation of up to Rs2 million for the victims. Heavy rainfall last month triggered floods, destroying nearly a hundred homes and claiming at least five lives. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti expressed gratitude, stating,"I want to thank all those people in this time of difficulty who took care of our brothers and helped the people of Balochistan."

KSrelief will collaborate with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Balochistan government to ensure the efficient distribution of food bags to over 63,000 individuals in need. The Saudi humanitarian organization's comprehensive support will extendaidto an additional 63,000 individuals, offering crucial relief amid the crisis. This initiative underscores the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's steadfast commitment to humanitarian efforts as facilitated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.
