Imran Khan, a former prime minister of Pakistan, will show up in court today, according to his lawyer, ending a tense standoff between his supporters and security personnel who were attempting to detain him for avoiding justice.
Khan made his decision after the High Court in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, cancelled an arrest warrant it had issued for the former cricket star following his repeated absences from hearings on allegations that he had improperly sold state gifts given to him by foreign dignitaries while serving as prime minister.
Khan rejects the accusations. Earlier this week, when security forces tried to detain Imran Khan, Khan’s supporters engaged in fierce combat. Police responded by firing water cannons and tear gas at the crowds that had gathered outside Khan’s Lahore home.
When Khan left the Lahore High Court, where he had been granted bail in numerous other counts against him, lawyer Azhar Siddique told the media that Khan would appear before the trial court in Islamabad today.
