Norwegian sensation Othelie Høie, aged 20, has made her nation proud by snatching a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships. Høie managed to pull off an impressive comeback against her German adversary, Elena Brügger, who is six years her senior. Despite Brügger leading the match initially with a score of 1-0, Høie demonstrated her determination and skill, first evening the score and then going on to secure a triumphant victory with a final score of 5-1.
This victory is not only significant because it marks Høie’s first World Championship medal, but also because it follows a previous bronze medal win in the European Championship just a few months prior. It’s safe to say that Høie is quickly establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in the wrestling world.
Høie expressed both surprise and satisfaction with her performance, having initially entered the championship primarily for experience. She attributes her success to her stamina and a familiarity with her opponent, having had the opportunity to train with and against her in the past. This familiarity likely gave her an edge in anticipating Brügger’s moves and devising a winning strategy.
While the 59-kilogram weight category in which Høie competed is not an Olympic weight class, she is not letting this deter her from her ultimate goal. Høie plans to attempt qualifying for the 57-kilogram weight class in the spring. Her mother, Gudrun Høie, herself a former world champion, believes her daughter’s impressive performance should provide a solid foundation for the upcoming European qualification in April and potentially the world qualification in May.
Before facing Brügger, Høie secured her place in the bronze match after drawing 4-4 and winning on the “last point” against Russian competitor Anastasiia Sidelnikova. Høie also expressed admiration for her training partner, Grace Bullen, who is set to compete in the 62-kilogram weight class, an Olympic weight class. For Bullen to qualify for the Paris Olympics, she must rank among the top five.
While this victory is certainly cause for celebration, Høie is not resting on her laurels. She is looking forward to competing at the U23 World Championships in the coming month. However, her ultimate goal remains the Olympic qualification in the 57-kilogram class next spring. With her recent successes and clear determination, it’s a goal that seems well within her reach.
