Presidential Candidate Expresses Concern over Rising Insecurity in Nigeria’s Education System

Student Abduction Raises National Security Concerns
Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed his concern over a recent incident of student abduction at the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State. According to Obi, such incidents of violence and insecurity will only discourage more students from pursuing education in the country.
Obi referred to the abduction as an unfortunate and disturbing act, highlighting the pressing issue of national insecurity threatening the peace and development of Nigeria. In addition to discouraging students from pursuing education, he emphasized that these incidents further undermine the country’s education system and contribute to the growing number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
Government’s Primary Duty: Securing Lives and Properties
Obi called upon the government to fulfil its primary duty of securing lives and properties. He emphasized that ensuring the safety and security of citizens is a crucial step towards national development. He further remarked that the government’s inability to adequately address national security issues will continue to negatively impact the country’s development trajectory.

However, he urged them to intensify their efforts to ensure the safe return of the remaining students. He expressed sympathy for the victims and their families, praying for their safe return.
An Attack on Education
Obi stated that attacks on students are an attack on the country’s education system. He referenced the alarming statistic that over 18 million children in Nigeria are already out of school. He stressed that incidents of violence, such as the recent abduction, will only further contribute to this number, exacerbating the country’s education crisis.
He extended his sympathies to the victims of the abduction and their families, expressing his anguish at the unfortunate incident. He also prayed for the safe return of the students.

He identified combating insecurity as a priority for achieving the vision of a new Nigeria. He expressed his belief in the possibility of a safe and secure Nigeria, urging citizens and the government to work together to realize this vision.
Obi’s comments come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with increasing cases of abductions, particularly of students. These incidents have sparked national and international outrage, with calls for the government to take decisive action to address the security challenges plaguing the country.
