Popular Onitsha Main Market On Fire

A section of the popular Main Market in Onitsha is currently on fire. The source of the early morning inferno is still unknown as firefighters battle to put out the raging inferno.

A trader in the market, Obenta Jude, disclosed that two blocks of shops within the Kano Street section of the market has so far been razed by the inferno.

The state’s Fire Chief, Engineer Martin Agbili, disclosed that firefighters had been dispatched to the area while confirming the incident.

He said: “At about 0220hrs (2.20 am) of Monday, 28-11-2022, Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call of a fire outbreak at Kano Street behind Main Market, Onitsha.

“However, we deployed our fire truck and firefighters to scene of fire and they have been working there. They have gone for refilling of the fire truck twice,” he added.

Fire outbreaks in Nigerian markets have been recurrent in recent times, with traders in popular markets in Lagos and Kano States experiencing major losses as a result of fire outbreaks, usually linked to electricity.
