Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces: A Beacon of Solidarity and Patriotism Amid Earthquake Aftermath

Unwavering Dedication in the Face of Adversity
In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco’s Al Haouz region on September 8, the tireless efforts of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) have been a testament to their unwavering dedication and sense of duty. The soldiers’ continuous work, professionalism, and commitment in providing support and assistance to the quake victims have been widely celebrated, reflecting their deep commitment to their fellow citizens under all circumstances.
A poignant video capturing the soldiers singing their anthem in unison in the Atlas Mountains, a stark symbol of their pride and honor in serving their nation, has circulated widely on social media. Since the earthquake, the FAR have been at the forefront, undertaking various operations including rescuing victims, distributing aid, and constructing campsites for affected communities.
Complexity of the Situation
The magnitude of 6.8 earthquake, the most powerful and deadliest since 1960, struck Al Haouz Province, lying beneath the High Atlas mountain range. The epicenter was located near the Ighil commune, approximately 44.6 miles southwest of Marrakech. The catastrophe resulted in over 2,900 deaths and 5,000 injuries, with the majority of casualties in Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Chichaoua provinces. According to the World Health Organization, the quake affected approximately 300,000 people in Marrakech and the surrounding areas.
The geographical and logistical complexities of the situation made it difficult for Morocco to accept all international aid offers indiscriminately. Despite these challenges, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces confirmed the deployment of specialized intervention units, including search and rescue teams and field hospitals, to the affected areas, exemplifying their swift response.
Immediate Response and Rehabilitation Efforts
Under the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, a ministerial committee was immediately established to develop a program for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of damaged homes. Royal directives were also issued to provide immediate assistance to those in dire situations, especially orphans, by offering food, water, clothing, and temporary housing. Search teams were also bolstered to expedite rescue and evacuation operations for the wounded.
The Moroccan Parliament’s Finance and Economic Development Committees established a dedicated treasury account for relief, aligning with the legal framework for such accounts outlined in the Moroccan constitution and Finance Law. This specialized account plays a pivotal role in coordinating resources for immediate relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts in earthquake-affected regions.
A Wave of National Solidarity
The earthquake aftermath witnessed a remarkable wave of solidarity and social mobilization at a grassroots level. Moroccans from various walks of life, including civil society activists, human rights advocates, and community members, came together to support the earthquake-affected areas, particularly those in remote mountainous regions. Tens of thousands of Moroccans responded to the authorities’ calls to address the urgent need for blood donations, showcasing the unity of the Moroccan people and transforming the rescue and relief efforts into a source of national pride.
International Recognition and Assistance
International media has begun to highlight the impressive unity among Moroccans and the country’s willingness to address the tragedy with its own resources and the support of its people. Offers of assistance also poured in from around the world, with Morocco responding to offers of support from friendly countries. These collective efforts underscored Morocco’s commitment to effectively respond to natural disasters and enhance its disaster management capabilities.
The inspiring efforts of the Royal Armed Forces in the wake of the Al Haouz earthquake reflect their immense pride and honor in serving their nation. Their ceaseless dedication, professionalism, and unwavering support to their fellow citizens during these challenging times have not only brought solace to the affected communities but have also become a source of pride and admiration for the entire nation.
