Andres Manuel Lopez Obrado, the President of Mexico’s supporters, marched in thousands on Sunday in a massive demonstration through the center of the capital. They held this march to express their support for the head of state prior to the 2024 general election.
The president, fondly called AMLO, addressed the crowd at Zocalo square at the city’s center and said, “Mexico is no longer run by oligarchy, now there is a democratic system whose priority is the poor”.
Lopez Obrador’s administration was making double-digit minimum wage hikes for the past four years and proposed that the wage hike could be around 20% and said economic growth would beat expectations. Due to his reforms, the president’s approval ratings are at around 60%.
In Mexico, presidents are limited to a single six-year term. Hence, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum would be likely party candidates to run for the next election, scheduled for 2024.
