Following initial investigations, the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office confirmed the crime and reported that it has opened an investigation for the crime of homicide. Hernández Vásquez was working as a janitor at a secondary school, where he was on his way to when he was intercepted by armed men.

The mayor-elect was shot in the head and died instantly. His body was found in a dirt road. Specialized experts arrived at the scene to process the evidence found at the site.

Crispín Hernández Vázquez was scheduled to be sworn in as municipal president of San Pedro Mixtepec on January 1, 2023.
