High-End Performance at Mid-Range Cost: The CUPRA Formentor vs Audi S3

The Allure of Premium Auto Brands
Premium auto brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are renowned for their exclusivity and technological prowess. These manufacturers take pride in their substantial investments in technology and innovation, often leading to the creation of unique engines and features not shared with other brands, particularly those in the middle or economy class. However, there’s a twist in the tale with Audi and its sporty CUPRA models.
The Unconventional Sharing of Technology
Unlike many premium auto brands, Audi has not reserved its technological advancements for its exclusive brand alone. The Audi RS3 model, the only car in the market with a 5-cylinder engine, a feature maintained since the legendary Group B rally times, is a prime example of this. This distinctive engine, known for its roaring tone and beastly nature, also appeared a few years ago in the most potent version of the CUPRA Formentor VZ5.
Comparing the CUPRA Formentor VZ and Audi S3
The CUPRA Formentor VZ and the Audi S3 share the same 2.0-liter engine with 310 horsepower. This feature allows the Spanish crossover, which comes with all-wheel drive, to match its premium class donor in terms of dynamics. Impressively, it can achieve 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds, ensuring that it does not lag behind in performance.
Performance and Price Considerations
The 310 horsepower CUPRA Formentor VZ model, equipped with all-wheel drive, is priced competitively from €40,400 in Lithuania. At this price range, one can only buy a front-wheel-drive Audi A3 model with a 1.5-liter 150 horsepower TFSI engine and an S line package. By comparison, the RS3 model starts at a significantly higher €63,500, which can easily escalate to €75,000 with additional features. Although the Audi S3 model is no longer offered in Lithuania, the high-performance Spanish crossover can replace almost all of its dynamic features.
The CUPRA Formentor VZ on the Track
The Spanish manufacturer’s crossover is not only suitable for dynamic everyday driving but also for serious challenges on the track. A car journalist who drove the CUPRA Formentor VZ in a Press Rally expressed admiration for the vehicle’s precise control, highlighting its potential for both casual and professional driving.
The CUPRA Formentor Models: A Closer Look
The VZ5 version of the Formentor, exclusive and more brutal, is a delight for aggressive driving enthusiasts. However, the 2.0-liter 310 horsepower version offers nearly the same dynamic features and combines them with practicality. In this regard, the SUV model outshines the Audi S3. The 1.5-liter 150 horsepower or 2.0-liter 190 horsepower versions of the CUPRA Formentor impress with rational dynamics and lower fuel consumption, but maintain sporty handling features and a distinctive style.
