Unprecedented Aftermath: UAE’s Humanitarian Assistance in Post-Hurricane Daniel Libya

UAE’s Humanitarian Aid in the Wake of Hurricane Daniel

In an effort to alleviate the challenging humanitarian situation in Libya following the devastation caused by Hurricane Daniel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been providing ongoing air support to the troubled nation. The UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development Affairs and International Organizations, Sultan Al Shamsi, confirmed that this air bridge has been active since September 12. Since its inception, the UAE has dispatched a total of 28 aircrafts that have carried over 622 tons of humanitarian and relief aid, benefitting as many as 6,386 families in Libya.

The aid provided by the UAE includes food supplies, shelter materials, health packages, and first aid supplies. The eastern regions of Libya, which were most adversely affected by the hurricane, have been the primary recipients of this aid. In addition to these supplies, state-of-the-art equipped search and rescue teams have also been dispatched as part of the aid package to aid challenging tasks on the ground.

Humanitarian Endeavors Amidst Challenging Circumstances

The UAE’s continued commitment to providing humanitarian aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Daniel underscores its dedication to provide relief and support to Libyan families during this challenging time. Such efforts are of paramount importance in the face of the massive devastation caused by the hurricane.

Devastation Caused by Hurricane Daniel

Hurricane Daniel has caused unprecedented destruction in Libya, particularly in its eastern regions. Over 5,000 people are presumed dead and around 10,000 missing following the heavy rains and the subsequent collapse of two dams. The eastern city of Derna has borne the brunt of the devastation, with entire neighborhoods believed to have been washed away. Hospitals in Derna are no longer operable, and the morgues are overflowing. Dead bodies have been left outside the morgues, further highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The international community has been quick to respond to the crisis in Libya. Several countries, including Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Turkey, and the UAE, have expressed their commitment to providing humanitarian assistance. The United States is also coordinating with the United Nations and Libyan authorities to determine how they can best assist with ongoing relief efforts. Nonetheless, the scale of the disaster has emphasized the need for international cooperation to help Libya recover from this calamity.

Conclusion

The UAE’s humanitarian assistance to Libya in the aftermath of Hurricane Daniel highlights the importance of global solidarity in the face of natural calamities. While the road to recovery will be long and arduous, the commitment of nations like the UAE provides a glimmer of hope for those severely affected by this disaster.
