President of Galmudug Denies Injury in Al-Shabaab Attack on Las-Gacamey

In a morning filled with tension and uncertainty, President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qorqor of Galmudug, a semi-autonomous region in Somalia, faced the fallout of a suicide attack in the Las-Gacamey area within the Badaweyne district. The President has categorically denied sustaining any injuries in the attack and reassured the public of his safety. This incident, allegedly orchestrated by the extremist group Al-Shabaab, has raised concerns about security in the region.

Addressing the nation via a recorded video message, President Qorqor firmly refuted reports of injuries and labeled them as propaganda propagated by Al-Shabaab. He emphasized that not only is he unharmed, but other officials in the area are also safe. This defiant response underscores the resilience and determination of the regional leadership to counter the extremist group’s efforts.

Al-Shabaab’s Cowardly Act and Government’s Resolve

Characterizing the attack as a “cowardly act,” President Qorqor condemned Al-Shabaab’s actions and indicated that such desperate measures signal the group’s waning influence. He asserted that his administration remains committed to the ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab, with plans to take an active role in the front lines of the conflict. President Qorqor expressed optimism, hinting at an impending significant victory in the war against the extremist group.

Reports from the scene revealed that a car loaded with explosives was used in the attack, targeting the gathering of officials in Las-Gacamey. While President Qorqor asserted his unharmed status, it was confirmed that some individuals did sustain injuries. MP Abdisalan Dhabancad, present with the President’s delegation, reported hand injuries, while Senator Abdighaibdid disclosed head injuries resulting from the explosion’s impact, which also caused structural damage to the building they were in.
