A Doorway to Prosperity: Canada Boosts Support for Jordan-Saudi Arabia Border Hub Project

Developing Relationships and Investments

Under the crisp desert sky in Aqaba, a recent visit by Canada’s Ambassador to Jordan, Tarek Khan, showcased the cooperative efforts—and potential rewards—of international partnership. In a meeting with the Aqaba Governorate Council, Ambassador Khan discussed the embassy’s commitment to advancing development and tourism projects in the region. The centerpiece of this collaboration is the establishment of the Durra border hub between Jordan and Saudi Arabia, a venture supported by the Canadian government to reinvigorate the region and attract tourists and investors.

A Visit with a Purpose

Ambassador Khan emphasized that his visit was not just a diplomatic formality, but a hands-on exploration of public and private institutions associated with the investment project. Moreover, he announced the docking of a Canadian ship on Aqaba’s shores, which will bring approximately 260 Canadian tourists to explore the city and the surrounding Golden Triangle area. This visit, Khan revealed, underscores the potential for increased tourism to Jordan.

Empowering the Local Community

Addressing the Aqaba Provincial Assembly, Khan pledged to consider ideas and requests aimed at local empowerment, particularly through community tourism, vocational and technical education, and targeted development projects for women and youth. Khan’s commitment to these initiatives mirrors Canada’s legacy as a steadfast supporter of Jordan in various domains since the 1960s.

Overcoming Hurdles for Progress

While exploring potential improvements, the council also highlighted the obstacles within education, health, and tourism that impede the evolution of the border hub. They welcomed Canada’s role in mitigating these challenges, particularly through funding the Durra Border Centre. Such an endeavour, they suggested, can avert these hurdles and increase the inflow of Saudi Arabian visitors.

Building on Strong Bilateral Ties

The council emphasized the mutual benefits of an extended cooperation with Canada, pointing to the rich, shared history dating back to the early sixties. Specifically, the council suggested the exchange of expertise, elevation of bilateral tourism, and joint advancements in agriculture, education, and health sectors.

A Hub of Global Significance

Throughout his visit, Ambassador Khan also met with the governor, Khalid Al-Hajjaj, and Nayef Al-Fayez, head of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority. Both underscored the importance of the Durra gateway as a significant trade and logistics junction. The ongoing update of the gateway underlines the concerted, international efforts to revitalize the tourism city, with a promise to welcome visitors with a brand new appeal, befitting both Aqaba and Jordan.
