In response to the gunfire, the Israeli military returned fire at the gunmen. The officer, identified as Ashraf Sheikh Ibrahim by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party, tragically lost his life while confronting the aggression and occupation's intrusion into Jenin.

In a separate event on the same day, Jewish settlers inaugurated a seminary in a region that has been under scrutiny by the United States, eliciting condemnation from the Palestinian side. Settler leader Yossi Dagan marked the occasion by reciting a Jewish benediction at the entrance of the Homesh seminary school, situated atop a West Bank hill. His words, "With God's help ... there will be many more new settlements in northern Samaria," alluded to the settlers' desire for increased settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Controversial Settlement Inauguration Sparks Palestinian Condemnation

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been mired in protracted tensions, with peace talks aimed at establishing a Palestinian state faltering in 2014 and showing limited signs of revival. Consequently, violence between Israelis and Palestinians has surged over the past year, exacerbating the already volatile situation.

Most countries worldwide consider Israel's settlements to be illegal, a view that Israel disputes. Palestinians argue that these settlements encroach upon the land they aspire to have for their future state and point to the escalating violence perpetrated by settlers. Palestinian President Abbas, demanding action, called for the removal of Homesh, emphasizing that mere statements of condemnation are no longer sufficient to counter the extremism exhibited by the right-wing Israeli government.

To address international concerns, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel has no intention of constructing new settlements. However, his nationalist-religious government remains committed to strengthening existing ones, maintaining a delicate balance between domestic politics and international scrutiny.
