The Punjab police have heightened security measures throughout the state in pursuit of Amritpal Singh, a Khalistani sympathizer who is currently on the run. The crackdown on Waris Punjab De (WPD) chief, led by Amritpal Singh, began on Saturday, resulting in the apprehension of 78 members of the organization.
The police action came just a day before Amritpal Singh’s scheduled religious procession, known as Khalsa Wahir, which was set to begin in Muktsar district.
Several localities in Punjab have implemented extensive vehicle checks and increased security to locate Amritpal Singh. On Sunday, four members of Amritpal Singh’s group were brought from Punjab to Assam, among the 78 people arrested during the Punjab government’s operation on WPD.
The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the accused would be held in jail with appropriate security. Despite the implementation of Section 144 in many districts of Punjab, the Ludhiana Rural Police apprehended 15 people on Sunday for protesting in support of Amritpal Singh.
The Punjab police maintain that there is currently no law and order issue in Jalandhar and that flag marches are being held to reassure the public. The police have also seized Amritpal Singh’s convoy vehicle, and an investigation is underway, including a probe into any possible ISI connection.
Overall, the police have taken significant measures to apprehend Amritpal Singh and maintain law and order in the state.
