Officials said the head of Haiti’s National Police Academy was shot dead Friday in a gang-infested area of the capital Port-au-Prince, the latest in a string of deadly attacks in the Caribbean nation.
According to police spokesman Garry Desrosiers, Harington Rigaud “was shot in the head not far from the academy,” and the attackers also stole Rigaud’s vehicle and kidnapped his driver.
The attack occurred in a neighborhood controlled by Vitelhomme Innocent, a gang leader wanted in the United States for his role in the kidnapping of 16 American missionaries in October 2021.
Authorities in the United States have offered up to $1 million in reward money for information leading to his capture.
