Supporting Ukraine: A Defense of Western Values and Territorial Integrity, Says Finnish Minister

A Defense of the European Way of Life

Providing support to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict is not an act of charity, but a defense of the European way of life, Western values, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. This perspective was shared by the Finnish Foreign Minister during an interview. The Minister warned that without the West’s assistance, there might not be a Ukraine, but a very strong Russia. This scenario would be particularly detrimental for nations sharing a border with Russia.

Costs of War and Western Unity

Addressing the financial implications of the war and the divisions in the West regarding the purpose of continued support, the Minister pointed out that the future shape of the conflict largely hinges on the Ukrainians themselves. The Minister emphasized that it is primarily their country and their sovereignty they are defending. In doing so, they are also safeguarding the entire world order. The unity of the West at the beginning of the conflict was surprising, and the Minister expressed hope that this unity will persist.

Reversing the Defense Trend

The Minister reminded listeners of a once-popular trend in Europe of reducing costs by stopping the development of the defense industry and dismantling defense forces. In her view, the trend now needs to reverse. The Minister called for more attention to be paid to defense and security, emphasizing that everyone must contribute, and that this message was particularly important to Finland.

Russian Democracy Post-Putin?

Discussing the potential future of Russia, the Minister expressed the view that even if Putin were to leave power, it is highly unlikely that Russia would become a peaceful, normal democracy. She believes that it is necessary to prepare for the worst-case scenario, in which Russia remains the same or becomes even worse.

The Price of War: Sanctions

Turning to the subject of sanctions, the Minister acknowledged their impact on ordinary people. However, she argued that there is no alternative and that Russia and the Russian people must understand that conducting an unfair and illegal war comes at a price.

Conclusion

In summary, the Finnish Foreign Minister firmly believes that supporting Ukraine is a defense of Western values and territorial integrity. She underlines the importance of unity among Western nations and stresses the need to invest more in defense and security. While acknowledging the impact of sanctions on ordinary people, she views them as a necessary measure in response to Russia’s actions.
