Finland’s Peacekeeping Mission in Mali comes to an End

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), known for its active involvement in supporting Mali’s transitional authorities, has officially ended.

The last troops from Finland, who played a significant role in the mission, have returned home, marking the end of Finland’s military involvement in MINUSMA.

MINUSMA was established by the United Nations Security Council to provide a safe environment for the rebuilding of Mali.

However, the Security Council decided against renewing the mandate for MINUSMA on June 30, 2023, leading to the planned withdrawal of all remaining mission personnel by December 31, 2023. Only a single civilian crisis management expert from Finland will continue to stay in Mali.

Finland’s Continued Role in International Peacekeeping Operations

Despite the conclusion of its role in MINUSMA, Finland remains actively involved in various international military and civilian crisis management initiatives.

These include operations under the United Nations (UN), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), European Union (EU), Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and the Global Coalition against ISIL.

Finland is set to maintain its participation in ten other military crisis management operations, engaging approximately 450 Finnish soldiers. The largest Finnish contingent, comprising around 200 soldiers, is currently stationed in Lebanon as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

A Look Back at Finland’s Involvement in MINUSMA

Finland joined the mission in 2013, aiming to support Mali’s transitional authorities in the establishment and maintenance of a safe environment. The mission was designed to help rebuild the country after a period of significant unrest.

The Finnish peacekeepers were part of a larger international force working towards stabilizing the country. Their contribution to the mission was substantial, and their withdrawal marks the end of a significant chapter in Finland’s international peacekeeping operations.

What Lies Ahead for Finland’s Military Involvement

Finland’s commitment to international peacekeeping operations remains unwavering. The Finnish Defense Forces will continue to contribute to international security and stability through their involvement in various global military and civilian crisis management initiatives.

Their active participation in these initiatives showcases Finland’s commitment to maintaining international peace and security.
