Highway Havoc: Recurring Truck Accidents Raise Safety Concerns in North Vancouver

Trans-Canada Highway Collision Causes Shutdown

A significant collision involving a truck and the Main Street overpass on the Trans-Canada Highway in North Vancouver led to the closure of Highway 1 eastbound on Tuesday night. The announcement was made by DriveBC just after 7:15 p.m., which caused heavy traffic congestion. Drivers were advised to use the Lions Gate Bridge as an alternative route to access the North Shore.

The highway remained closed in the Dollarton area as of 8:15 p.m. The accident occurred after a heavy rainfall in Metro Vancouver, following a period of relatively dry weather. This event raises concerns due to its addition to a series of similar incidents in the region.

Truck Drivers Voice Safety Concerns

The recurrence of these incidents has prompted truck drivers to voice safety concerns. In response, the Ministry of Transportation has pledged to increase enforcement measures, particularly regarding vehicle height. The ministry has held commercial vehicle drivers accountable for adhering to the conditions of their licenses and ensuring their loads complied with height restrictions.

As part of its efforts to prevent further collisions, the ministry is considering stricter enforcement measures. These include implementing higher fines, extending license suspensions, and increasing driver education.

Semi-Truck Overturns, Striking Overpass

In a similar incident, a semi-truck flipped over and hit the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge’s overpass. The accident occurred around 4 a.m., causing a traffic nightmare for commuters. The driver, a 47-year-old man, was not seriously hurt but was arrested for driving while impaired and driving while prohibited.

The accident led to concerns about the overpass’s structural integrity, causing the temporary closure of the westbound lanes on Highway 1. This closure led to significant traffic delays. However, the overpass was later deemed structurally safe after an assessment by engineers.

Fuel Spill and Traffic Delays

Once the crash was cleared, a fuel spill left the roadway slick and dangerous. A significant amount of sand was needed to soak up the spill, causing further delays. The highway was reopened around 9:45 a.m. Eastbound traffic was not affected, but many drivers were slowing down to observe the aftermath of the accident.

Additional Accidents on Highway 1

Adding to the chaos, another major accident shut down westbound traffic completely earlier in the morning, reducing eastbound traffic to one lane. This collision came only hours after the semi-truck accident. According to RCMP, five vehicles, including a jack-knifed semi-trailer truck, were involved in the accident, which happened just after 7 a.m. Three drivers suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries as a result.

Another accident involved a truck hitting the 17A overpass in Delta, just south of the George Massey Tunnel, before noon on Tuesday. The southbound lanes were completely closed, causing major gridlock during the afternoon commute. North Vancouver RCMP attributed a semi-truck rollover, which caused significant traffic disruptions, to a “load shift.”

Call for More Robust Measures

These accidents underscore the need for more robust safety measures on North Vancouver’s highways. The Ministry of Transportation’s pledge to increase enforcement measures, especially regarding vehicle height restrictions, is a step in the right direction. However, given the recurring nature of these incidents, more comprehensive measures may be necessary to ensure the safety of all road users.
