Halifax firefighters are battling a blaze that started early on Saturday morning at a scrap metal yard in Goodwood.

Shortly after 6 a.m., according to Geoff Garber, acting district chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, firefighters arrived at the scrapyard on Mills Drive, which is close to Prospect Road.

He said that most of the fire is contained in a sizable mound of debris that is 200 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 50 feet tall.

“There are huge piles of cars and whatnot, fridges and stuff, that has combustible materials, so it’s not just metal,” he said. “There’s no threat to anyone as far as fire spreading, it’s just a smoke hazard in the area, where the cloud cover’s holding smoke down.”
