On Tuesday, March 14th, the Brazilian government issued an interministerial decree providing temporary visas to Ukrainians affected by the war, as well as residence permits for stateless people who were displaced from the country.
The aim is to offer humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
The decree, signed by the Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs, states that any Ukrainian, “regardless of their migratory situation upon entry into Brazil,” can apply for a residence permit from the Federal Police, which will be valid for two years.
Last year, a few weeks after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Brazilian government offered humanitarian refuge to Ukrainians and stateless persons, with the possibility of working and applying for residency for an “indefinite period.”
