Thousands of Australians strip for Spencer Tunick cancer awareness photo shoot at Sydney

In an effort to raise awareness about skin cancer, over 2,500 people got nude on Saturday to pose for Spencer Tunick, U.S. photographic artist at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, in Australia.

Tunick is widely known for staging mass nude photo shoots at world landmarks.

For this campaign, Spencer Tunick used a megaphone to direct the attendees into several poses on the beach. Tunick said at the beach in Sydney that, “We have an opportunity to raise awareness about skin checks and I’m honoured … to come here, make my art and just celebrate the body and protection”.

In an attempt to spread awareness about melanoma, Australia’s fourth most common form of cancer, New York-based artist collaborated with a charity for this naked art installation at Sydney. The federal government estimates reveal that, 17,756 new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year, and 1,281 Australians are expected to die because of it.

Earlier, Tunick directed a mass shoot in Sydney in 2010, in which 5,200 Australians posed naked at the Sydney Opera House.
