Prisoners Escape During Lunch Break
In an unexpected turn of events, seven men, held under police custody for train thefts, escaped while being transported to court in Jhansi, India. The escape occurred while the officers on duty were reportedly having lunch together, leaving the door of the police van unlocked. The incident was captured on CCTV footage, which showed three of the prisoners, identified as Gayaprasad, Shailendra, and Brijendra, fleeing the van and scattering in different directions. Despite the escape being recorded, the whereabouts of the escapees remain unknown.
Police Officers Suspended for Negligence
As a consequence of this negligence, eight policemen have been suspended and a case has been filed against them. The officers charged with negligence include Sub-Inspectors Rajendra Anuragi, Pankaj Singh, and Suresh Singh, Head Constables Shivpal Singh, Sunil Kumar, Sandeep, and Deependra, and Constable Anil. Their duty to secure the prisoners was compromised, leading to this unfortunate incident.
New Charges Against the Escaped Prisoners
The escaped prisoners now face additional charges related to their escape. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Jhansi, Rajesh S, stated that an investigation into the alleged negligence is currently underway. He also mentioned that two teams from the Jhansi Police and a SWAT team have been assigned the task of apprehending the escapees. This incident underscores a significant lapse in security measures and emphasizes the need for more vigilance in prisoner handling and transportation.
Public Reaction and Criticism
The incident has roused public criticism, with the video of the escape circulating on social media. The Uttar Pradesh Police has faced substantial backlash for its negligence, which allowed the prisoners to escape. The video shows the escaped prisoners running on the streets after exiting the police van, highlighting the lax security measures in place.
Investigation and Future Measures
In response to the incident, a committee has been formed to investigate the matter further. Two additional teams have been assembled to locate and apprehend the accused, who remain at large. The teams are reviewing the CCTV footage from the area and other potential escape routes. Search operations in Madhya Pradesh and among the relatives of the accused have also been conducted. The police are confident that the escaped prisoners will be in custody soon. This incident signifies a glaring lapse in the security protocols followed by the police.
