Paris Fashion Week 2023: Pierre Cardin’s Blue Ocean-Inspired Collection

Paris Fashion Week, the much-anticipated global fashion event, kicked off with a show from Pierre Cardin, held in a building designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. This venue, which serves as the headquarters of France’s Communist Party, was bathed in blue light to echo the theme of the collection. This marks the French label’s second show at Paris Fashion Week since the death of its founder, Pierre Cardin, in 2020.
Blue Ocean Inspiration
Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin, the great-nephew of the late designer, revealed that the collection was inspired by the color blue, symbolizing the ocean. The purpose of the collection was to emphasize the importance of protecting the planet. Models showcased dresses in indigo blue on a deep blue catwalk beneath the expansive reinforced concrete dome.
Paris Fashion Week Schedule
This year’s Paris Fashion Week, which will continue until October 3, will feature more than 100 designers. These include famous brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Hermes. Several new international designers, along with the French fashion house Balmain, will also be participating. Balmain confirmed that despite a recent theft resulting in the loss of approximately 50 items from its collection, it will present its 2024 spring-summer collection.
Impending Shows
The event will host shows from fashion houses, including Dior and Saint Laurent on Tuesday; Courreges and Dries Van Noten on Wednesday; and Lanvin and Givenchy on Thursday. The headquarters where the show took place is occasionally rented out for different events like fashion shows and music videos, besides being used by the French Communist Party for political activities.
Pierre Cardin’s Legacy
The show delivered an impressive tribute to Pierre Cardin’s legacy, with a collection that encapsulated his fascination with space and the future. Dresses and tops featured metallic appliqué shells and corals, reflecting the ocean inspiration. Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin’s mission to continue his great-uncle’s legacy and his focus on environmental protection was evident in this collection. His designs, although futuristic, conveyed a message about the urgent need to protect our planet.
