According to Palestinian health officials, Israeli forces killed at least nine Palestinians, including a 60-year-old woman, and injured several others during a raid in a conflict zone area of the WestBank on Thursday.

According to Palestinian health officials, the violence occurred during a fierce daytime operation in the Jenin refugee camp, a West Bank militant stronghold that has been the target of nearly a year of Israeli arrest raids.

The conflict reached a climax this month, with 29 Palestinians killed since the start of the year. It was unclear how many of those killed on Thursday were associated with armed groups.

The fighting comes just weeks after Israel's new government pledged to take a hard line against the Palestinians and increase settlement construction on land sought by the Palestinians for their hoped-for state.

It also comes just days before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to arrive in the region and push for steps that could improve Palestinians' daily lives.

The Israeli military claimed that it was conducting the rare daytime operation in response to intelligence that a militant group linked to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which has a significant presence in the camp, was planning to carry out imminent attacks against Israelis.

A gun battle erupted, with the military claiming to have targeted the militants. Palestinians identified at least one of the dead as a militant.
