

On September 18, 2023, the Pakistani Foreign Minister, Syed Jalil Abbas Jilani, arrived at the country’s mission to the United Nations (UN). He was warmly welcomed by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan, Mohammad Aamir Khan. This visit underlines Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to active participation in international diplomacy and its engagement with global affairs.
Pakistan’s involvement in the UN and its active engagement in international diplomacy is of significant importance. Since its membership began on September 30, 1947, Pakistan has been an active participant in the UN and its specialized agencies and other bodies, as well as in various UN conferences. Its active role within the UN reflects its commitment to playing a part in addressing global issues and shaping international policies.
In 2022, on the sidelines of the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, a meeting took place between the Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, and the Pakistani Foreign Minister. Both sides agreed to maintain close high-level exchanges and to develop the unbreakable, all-weather friendship between China and Pakistan further. This meeting underscores the importance of bilateral relations in the realm of international diplomacy and further highlights Pakistan’s active role within the UN.
In February, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, paid his official visit to Pakistan. This visit was aimed at recognizing Pakistan’s outstanding generosity and solidarity over many decades and highlighting its place in confronting some of the biggest global challenges. The Secretary-General’s visit also included meetings with Pakistani officials, including the Foreign Minister, and a tour of the new premises of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
In August 2023, a two-day UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting was hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad. The meeting focused on the safety and security of UN Peacekeepers, bringing together a diverse range of participants, including senior officials from the UN Secretariat and representatives from UN Member States. This event underscores Pakistan’s commitment to UN peacekeeping and its ongoing work to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of UN peacekeeping operations.
Pakistan’s active engagement in international diplomacy, as evidenced by its active participation in the UN and its hosting of key diplomatic events, is an important part of its foreign policy. By maintaining an active presence within the UN and fostering strong bilateral relations with other member states, Pakistan continues to play a significant role in addressing global issues and shaping international policies. The visits of the Foreign Minister to the UN mission and the UN Secretary-General to Pakistan, alongside the ministerial meetings, all serve to underscore this commitment.
