Austrian Mountaineer Raises Funds for Deceased Pakistani Porter’s Family: A Testament to Humanity

A Noble Gesture Amid Tragedy
In a touching gesture of humanity, Wilhelm Standl, an Austrian mountaineer, has raised a significant amount of money for the family of a Pakistani porter who tragically lost his life during a mountaineering expedition. Syed Wasi Ahmad Fatimi, Pakistan’s Minister of Tourism, lauded Standl’s selfless efforts during a special ceremony held in his honor.

Standl’s campaign, “Give me Fund for them,” raised $170,000 for the children of the late porter, Mohammed Hassan. The mountaineer’s dedication to supporting a family he had no personal ties with was considered by the minister as a counterpoint to the prevalent self-interest in today’s world. This incident has highlighted the need for more robust support systems for porters involved in mountaineering accidents.
Improvements for Porters in Pakistan’s Mountaineering Industry
During the ceremony, Minister Fatimi revealed that there had been no formal arrangement for porters involved in mountaineering accidents in the past. This lack of structure left families like Hassan’s without financial aid in case of accidents. However, this unfortunate incident has sparked significant changes in the industry.

Since taking charge of the Ministry of Tourism, Fatimi has overseen the establishment of a training center for porters. This initiative was made possible through collaboration with PTDC, Mr. Wali, and Gilgit-Baltistan University. The minister also disclosed that after extensive discussions with stakeholders in Islamabad and Skardu, the government has agreed on a minimum insurance coverage of 3 million for porters. Efforts are underway to increase this coverage to 5 million.
Continued Support and Future Plans
Standl’s noble act has not only provided financial support for Hassan’s family but also sparked a broader discussion about the welfare of porters in Pakistan’s mountaineering industry. During the ceremony, the Austrian mountaineer expressed his determination to continue supporting Hassan’s family and announced his plans to establish a school for porters in the near future.
Minister Fatimi thanked Standl on behalf of all Pakistanis for his actions, which he said were a perfect example of what people can achieve when they come together for a common cause. Standl’s efforts have indeed highlighted the importance of unity, compassion, and humanity, especially in times of tragedy.

The incident involving Mohammed Hassan’s death and Standl’s response serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by porters in the mountaineering industry. It underscores the pressing need for comprehensive safety measures, proper training, and financial security for these workers.
A Call for Greater Responsibility
While Standl’s actions provide a beacon of hope, they also call attention to the need for more systemic changes in the mountaineering industry. The incident has shed light on the stark realities faced by porters and the potential consequences of the lack of proper safety measures.
As this story continues to resonate globally, it serves as a timely reminder of our shared responsibility towards those risking their lives in extreme conditions. It calls on governments, mountaineering associations, and climbers worldwide to ensure the safety and well-being of porters, often the unsung heroes of successful mountaineering expeditions.
