Oppo A58: A Budget-Friendly Smartphone with Impressive Features

A New Addition to Oppo’s Range
Chinese tech giant, Oppo, has launched a new budget-friendly smartphone, the A58, in Switzerland. With a price point of 200 Swiss francs, the device offers an impressive array of features that focus on display, battery life, and speakers, despite some feature omissions due to cost-saving measures.
Oppo A58: Design and Display
The Oppo A58 is available in two colours and features a large 6.72″ display. Unlike many budget smartphones, the A58 boasts an IP54 certification, meaning it is protected against harmful amounts of dust and splash water. However, this doesn’t mean the phone is fully waterproof and should not be dropped in water.
Improved Speakers and Battery Life
Oppo has made significant improvements to the A58’s speakers, claiming to be 40% better than their predecessor. The volume has also been increased by 300%, making it particularly beneficial in noisy environments, with calls and voice messages also being amplified if needed.
The A58 is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery that can be charged with 33 watts, filling up in 75 minutes. Despite the large battery, the A58 is only 7.99mm thick and weighs 192 grams.
Processor and Software Updates
Unlike its predecessor, the A58 does not support 5G mobile communications, and the MediaTek Helio G85 processor only supports 4G. Oppo has yet to confirm if and how long updates for the A58 will be available. However, it has been revealed that the smartphone will receive two years of major ColorOS updates and three years of security updates.
Camera and Storage
The A58’s processor comes with a generous 6 GB of RAM, which can be virtually expanded to 12 GB for demanding tasks. The 128 GB storage now standard in this price range is also a positive feature. The 50-megapixel main camera with f/1.8 aperture makes a good impression on paper, but its capabilities are quickly limited; for example, it cannot shoot 4K videos. The second sensor with two megapixels is only for measuring depth information, and there is no wide angle or zoom. The selfie camera has a modest resolution of eight megapixels.
A Sensible Choice for Budget-Conscious Consumers
Overall, the Oppo A58 appears to be a successful combination of affordable price and reasonable basic features, making it a sensible choice for budget-conscious consumers or as a first smartphone. While it doesn’t offer high-end features like 5G connectivity or a top-of-the-line processor, it provides solid performance and a range of features that are more than adequate for everyday use.
