The Dubai-based Filipino architect, Patrick Soriano, has recently been awarded the Global Filipino Architect of the Year at the 2023 UAP Dubai Design Awards. With an expertise in landscape architecture, Soriano’s work illuminates the profound potential of well-designed landscapes to not only accommodate human activities but also narrate stories and evoke emotions. His architectural philosophy has always been to create living landscapes that can transform spaces into areas for relaxation, reflection, play, and inspiration.
Spanning a 15-year career in the Middle East, Soriano has earned a reputation for designing spaces that foster connections. These connections are not merely between individuals and communities, but also between people and nature. His unique approach to landscape architecture allows him to integrate his creative vision with his commitment to ecological balance, resulting in designs that cater to human needs while respecting the health of the planet. Techniques such as the use of native plant selections, water-efficient systems, and innovative stormwater management techniques have become hallmarks of his design strategy.

Among Soriano’s significant projects is The Valley Dubai, a residential community development located on the outskirts of Dubai. This project is a testament to Soriano’s design philosophy of ecological urbanism. The landscaped areas mimic the regional environment, incorporating wadi-like valley forms, an Arabic term for a dry riverbed that fills only after the rain. In a pioneering approach for the region, Soriano and his team implemented a reed bed system for wastewater treatment and stormwater release, providing a natural filtration system.
Adding to his list of notable projects, Soriano was also involved in the prestigious Dubai Expo 2020 project. This global platform for countries to share ideas and showcase human achievements is considered the world’s third-biggest event. Soriano contributed to the development of the master plan for the event, which encompassed 400 hectares of land, with half of it allocated for event areas and supporting infrastructure. The Expo’s design drew inspiration from a traditional Arab market, the souk, earning praise from industry professionals and mentors alike.
