Fortaleza’s Innovative Approach to Promote Cycling: The Xiringador

A Revolutionary Solution to Beat the Heat
As one of Brazil’s most populous cities, Fortaleza has recently launched an innovative approach to promote cycling and sustain the well-being of its cyclists. Known for its tropical climate, the intense heat in Fortaleza often becomes a challenge for cyclists. To address this issue, the city authorities have taken a significant step by introducing a pioneering device, dubbed the “Xiringador”. This water-spraying device was installed on Sunday, January 24, aiming to cool down cyclists and make their rides more comfortable.
Strategically Located Xiringador
The first-ever Xiringador is located on the Beira Mar Avenue at the intersection with Jose Vilar Street. This location was chosen strategically due to the high number of cyclists that pass through this area. The Xiringador device sprays water to help manage the intense heat that cyclists have to face while riding. This innovative solution is expected to greatly benefit the cycling community in the city.
More Xiringadors to Come
Following the installation of the first device, the city has pledged to set up four more Xiringador devices by the end of the same week. These devices will be placed in different parts of the city, particularly in areas with heavy cyclist traffic. The locations have been chosen with the aim to reach and benefit the maximum number of cyclists.
Apart of the Pedala Mais Initiative
The introduction of the Xiringador is part of Fortaleza’s new cycling policy, known as Pedala Mais. The policy is aimed at promoting cycling within the city and making it a more viable mode of transportation. The Coordinator of Urban Mobility in Fortaleza, Isabela Castro, expressed optimism about the success of the device. If the initial response is positive, the city plans to expand the initiative by installing more Xiringador devices throughout the city.
Encouraging a Healthier Lifestyle
The Xiringador initiative not only aims to make cycling more comfortable but also encourages a healthier lifestyle among the residents of Fortaleza. By promoting cycling as a viable mode of transport, the city is contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions, thus promoting environmental sustainability. Moreover, cycling is a great form of exercise, contributing to the physical health of the residents.
Conclusion
The introduction of the Xiringador is a testament to the city of Fortaleza’s commitment to enhancing its cycling infrastructure. This initiative serves as a model for other cities struggling with similar climatic challenges. The success of this initiative could potentially lead to a significant increase in the number of cyclists, making Fortaleza a more environmentally friendly and healthier city.
