Ales Svoboda, a Czech military pilot, was selected from nearly 22,600 applicants to join the reserve of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) new astronaut team, which was announced in Paris.
Out of the roughly 200 Czechs who had submitted applications for the project, Svoboda was the only successful candidate. In 2005, he joined the Czech army after completing his education at the University of Defense in Brno.
