Coming Soon: Google’s Pixel 8, Powered by a Novel Tensor G3 Chipset

Google’s upcoming Pixel 8 series, slated for an October release, is expected to be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset. This new chipset is reportedly based on the yet-to-be-released Exynos 2400. This development marks a significant step in Google’s ongoing commitment to creating its own system-on-chip (SoC) devices, allowing for more control over device performance and capabilities.

Tensor G4 Chipset: The Power Behind the 2024 Google Pixel 9

Looking further ahead, details have begun to emerge about the chipset that will power the 2024 Google Pixel 9 phones. The Tensor G4 chipset for the Pixel 9 is expected to be similar to the G3. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) will reportedly utilize one Cortex-X4 unit, A720 and A520 cores, while the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) will be the Immortalis-G715. Interestingly, the SoC is set to be manufactured by Samsung Foundry, following a failed deal with TSMC, the previous manufacturer, due to “low volume” issues.

Advanced Manufacturing: The 4LPP+ Process

The Tensor G4 is said to be built on the 4LPP+ process, which is a further development from the 4LPP node used for the Tensor G3. The specifics of the “Plus” difference remain undisclosed as Samsung has yet to release official details on its new 4nm process, which is a different technology than the current 4nm EUV. Despite the limited information available, the use of the 4LPP+ process for the Tensor G4 suggests a likely improvement in chipset production, particularly in terms of overheating issues.

Samsung Foundry: A Rising Force in Chipset Manufacturing

Google’s decision to partner with Samsung Foundry for the manufacturing of the Tensor G3 and G4 chipsets can be seen as an endorsement of Samsung Foundry’s ability to produce chipsets, including Exynos platforms, that do not overheat. This could potentially make Samsung’s chipsets more attractive to other phone companies and consumers. Nevertheless, no official announcements about the foundry and the systems-on-chip have been made yet.

Looking Ahead: Google’s Pixel Series and the Future of Chipsets

Google’s future Pixel series phones are set to be powered by the Tensor G3 and G4 chipsets, both of which are to be manufactured by Samsung Foundry. The Tensor G4 chipset, in particular, is expected to be built on an advanced 4LPP+ process. Despite the uncertainty and speculation surrounding the details, this indicates a likely improvement in chipset production, particularly in terms of overheating issues. As Google continues to invest in its own chipsets for its Pixel phones, we can expect to see further advancements in this area in the coming years.
