An Alarming Upward Trend in Cyber Crime

The state of Malacca in Malaysia is grappling with a significant rise in cyber crime, with reported losses reaching RM30.5 million (approximately $7.3 million) since the beginning of the year. This figure represents 1,359 cases of various online frauds, marking a worrying increase from the previous year. In 2022, the total financial loss due to cyber crimes stood at RM26.98 million (approximately $6.5 million), involving 1,109 cases.

Fraudulent activities such as Macau scams, love scams, online purchase scams, loan fraud, investment fraud, impersonation schemes, and fake job offers constitute the bulk of these cyber crimes. The rise in losses is alarming, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive action to address cyber incidents.
