Lithuania faced a significant cyber threat in 2022, as the Defence Ministry's National Cyber Security Report highlights the recording of more than 4,000 cyber attacks. While the overall number of attacks remained consistent compared to the previous year, there was a notable decrease of over 50% in medium-impact incidents.

Fortunately, no high-impact attacks were recorded in either 2022 or 2023, indicating the effectiveness of Lithuania's cybersecurity measures. However, the report warns of an alarming rise in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) incidents, marking a change from the previous year's pattern. Out of the total incidents reported in 2022, 33 fell into the medium category, primarily linked to DDoS attacks and the distribution of malware, enabling unauthorized access to communication systems for malicious activities.

Increase in DDoS Incidents and Malware Distribution Noted

The report highlights two primary categories of incidents: malware-related and information gathering. Malware incidents accounted for the highest number, with 1,795 cases reported, followed by information gathering incidents totaling 1,005. Over the course of the year, the number of incidents involving spam distribution, dissemination of misleading information, and DDoS attacks increased, emphasizing the growing complexity of cyber threats faced by Lithuania.

Disturbingly, the report reveals that information was sourced from public outlets, exposing attempts to manipulate over 130 publicly accessible websites. An attributed pro-Russian hacker group has taken responsibility for these attacks, raising concerns about external influences targeting Lithuania's digital infrastructure. The involvement of such groups necessitates heightened vigilance and robust defensive measures to safeguard critical systems and sensitive information.
