Google’s Bard: A Step Towards Factual Grounding in AI?
Google’s Bard: A Step Towards Factual Grounding in AI?

Google’s Response to AI Factual Errors
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gained significant traction in the world of technology. However, it often faces criticism for making factual errors, popularly known as “hallucinations” within the industry. To tackle this issue, Google has recently developed Bard, its innovative conversational AI. This new tool is designed to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which was launched with considerable fanfare towards the end of 2022. The unique feature of Bard is its capability to run parallel search queries in order to verify the accuracy of the AI’s responses. This approach is aimed at ensuring that the AI’s content aligns with information available on the web on the same subject.
Challenges with Large Language Processing Models
Google acknowledges the challenges associated with large language processing models, particularly when they confidently present erroneous information. A notable example of this was Bard’s incorrect attribution of the first observation of a planet outside the solar system to the James-Webb telescope during a demonstration. Similar errors are common among AI models. ChatGPT and its derivative version integrated into Bing’s search engine have often been incorrect about facts or dates, and have even invented book titles. The lack of factual reliability, while not an issue for some creative writing or fiction uses, is a hindrance to the adoption of language processing models by businesses.
Bard: Google’s Solution to Enhance Confidence in AI
Google’s Bard is designed to enhance the confidence of users in the generated content. With Bard, users can verify the answers provided by finding similar or different web content. This AI tool, which has been available in Europe since July, can be accessed through a separate homepage from Google. Users can type a written instruction and get an answer, similar to ChatGPT. However, they also have the option to press a “Google it” button. The search engine then runs an invisible query on each sentence or paragraph of the response. If the search appears to confirm Bard’s generated content, it will be highlighted in green. In contrast, if the search contradicts the AI, the excerpt will appear in red. By clicking on a paragraph, users can access an excerpt of the found pages that match Bard’s assertions.
The Future of Bard in Search
Google envisions Bard as a feature in search. The company has indicated that it will integrate AI features into search in the future to distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats. This will help users quickly understand the big picture and gain deeper insights into different topics. However, it is clear that Bard is not a replacement for search, but rather a feature to enhance the user’s search experience.
Bard: A Work in Progress
Despite its innovative approach, Bard is not without its challenges. It has been criticized for providing inaccurate, misleading, or false information while presenting it confidently. To address these issues, Google has employed crowdsourced workers to verify the accuracy of Bard’s responses. This strategy is expected to help train the AI and improve the quality of its output. However, concerns have been raised about whether these workers are given enough time to verify all of Bard’s outputs, leading to potential inaccuracies in the information provided by the AI.
Conclusion
Google’s Bard represents a significant step forward in the quest for more reliable artificial intelligence tools. By integrating a fact-checking mechanism, Bard aims to increase user confidence in AI-generated content. However, it’s clear that there are still many hurdles to overcome. As Google continues to refine Bard and address its shortcomings, it will be interesting to see how this new tool evolves and what impact it will have on the broader AI landscape.
